Où fixer les limites des deux continuations concurrentes Yonnet de Mez et Anseïs de Gascogne dans le manuscrit N ? À ces problèmes, déjà bien étudiés par la critique, la présente communication voudrait ajouter ceux que pose la seule chanson de Girbert de Mez. Constituée d’épisodes divers, qui peuvent aller jusqu’à s’apparenter à des continuations tardives, cette chanson mérite qu’on s’attarde à ses frontières internes (qui rejoindront les frontières géographiques que traversent les personnages). Étudier ainsi les limites des épisodes (et notamment leurs transitions) nous conduira également à interroger la riche tradition manuscrite (une vingtaine de manuscrits et fragments) qui participe au flottement des frontières de ce texte. La Geste des Loherains is an epic text with a turbulent history, whose "borders" have posed many problems for modern publishers : where does Garin le Lorrain stop, for example, and where does Girbert de Mez begin, the two constitutive songs of the original cycle? Where can we fix the limits of the two continuations Yonnet de Mez and Anseïs de Gascogne in the manuscript N? To these problems, already well studied by the critics, this communication would like to add those posed by the only Girbert de Mez. Made up of various episodes, this epic poem deserves our attention to its internal borders (which will join the geographic borders crossed by the characters).
