À travers leurs correspondances et leur journal, la traduction d’œuvres étrangères apparaît comme un dérivatif à l’angoisse des événements qui, loin d’être neutre, est le medium d’un véritable patriotisme littéraire. Se consacrant à la traduction en un temps où la déflagration mondiale fragilise la nation intellectuelle, Gide et Larbaud, sans revêtir l’uniforme, ont assuré le rayonnement des Lettres françaises, en augmentant le capital littéraire national, en revitalisant le champ littéraire français et en illustrant le génie de leur propre langue. This paper aims at studying two practices of translation during the First World War, through the figures of André Gide and Valery Larbaud, both translators for the Éditions de La NRF. Through their correspondences and diaries, translation might seem as a distraction from anxiety which, far from being neutral, is in fact a mean for expressing a true literary patriotism.
