Il s’agira de resituer ce texte dans une stratégie politique fondée sur une conception élargie de la traduction. Published in 1822 simply to accompany his retranslation of Letourneur’s Shakespeare, François Guizot’s De Shakspeare et de la poésie dramatique turns out to be a provocative political analysis of the role of popular theatre in the shaping of the political culture of nations. Appearing, as it does, in France, in the midst of a period political instability, Guizot’s text reads as a subtle critique of the Restauration’s manipulations of the Charte (the constitution improvised by Louis XVIII), and as a model for the use of translation as a means of introduction of alternate political cultures.
