Mais ce qui retient notre attention, c’est sa traduction du haïku japonais qui relève d’un statut particulier. Dans Une transaction secrète (1987), Jaccottet reconnaît avoir découvert ces poèmes d’une langue qu’il connaît fort mal, le japonais, par l’intermédiaire de l’anglais, qu’il ne maîtrise que relativement. Il choisit le mot transcrire pour désigner cette expérience particulière de transfert culturel. Selon ses propres mots, la transcription lui permet de s’émanciper de la déontologie du traducteur. C’est la fidélité à l’expérience bouleversante de la lecture qui devient l’exigence. Dans son recueil La Semaison, nous percevons les traces de l’influence du haïku. La concision et la quotidienneté du haïku refusent le moindre mouvement d’éloquence et interdisent tout abandon à la fluidité musicale, ce qui indique une nouvelle voie possible à la poésie pure. Les limites syllabiques du haïku se répercutent sur l’effacement de la personne, voire de ses attributs. Ainsi, Jaccottet, qui s’en inspire, interprète cet effacement de soi par la figure d’un sujet transitoire, au lieu d’abolir le sujet énonciateur. C’est en effet en empruntant aux autres leurs voix que Philippe Jaccottet accède réellement à sa parole poétique, la rend féconde. En analysant l’appropriation du haïku par Jaccottet, on mettra en lumière la poétique et l’éthique de cette « transcription ». Translator and poet Philippe Jaccottet is considered as a cultural traveller going back and forth between the French, English and German languages, but what catches our attention is his translation of Japanese haiku. Freeing himself from the ethics of translation by developing an ethics of his own, Jaccottet admits having discovered these poems in a language unknown to him: Japanese, via English, which he only masters relatively. Jaccottet chose the term “transcribe” to designate this particular experience of cultural transfer. As the verb “transcribe” emphasizes the notion of creative experience, the question of fidelity to the original project becomes secondary: what is deemed more significant is the fidelity to the sensory and emotional experience of reading. In Jaccottet’s poetic collection La Semaison, one may perceive all the traces of haiku. The inventory of haiku themes established by the Japanese tradition (seasons, meteors, animals, trees and flowers, human affairs, etc.) may also apply to most of Jaccottet's titles. The conciseness and the everydayness of haiku refuse the slightest movement of eloquence and prohibit any abandonment to musical fluidity, which indicates a new possible path to “pure” poetry. The syllabic limits of haiku have repercussions on the erasure of the person, or even on that of their attributes. While the grammatical characteristics of the Japanese language allow verses to be constructed without subject or predicate, French grammar does not allow such treatment of verse in poetry. Thus, Jaccottet transferred this sense of self-effacement through the figure of a transitory subject, instead of abolishing the enunciating subject. It was in fact by borrowing the voices of others that Philippe Jaccottet succeeded in finding his own poetic voice and in making his poetry blossom.
