Cette petite ville, située dans les Vosges, est alors un haut lieu de la broderie. Celle-ci y est pourtant d’abord un « travail d’appoint » qui s’inscrit dans un apprentissage du féminin et du maternel dans le cadre de la dot et du trousseau. L’invisibilisation des brodeuses par le travail à domicile et ce qu’il implique est une autre constante observée dans les différents témoignages oraux et écrits répertoriés. « L’activité » de broder peut également être resituée dans un contexte plus global : celui de l’avènement du capitalisme industriel. This article looks at women’s work, particularly embroidery, and the conditions that made it possible for them to become independent in the nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, using Fontenoy-le-Château as an example. This small town in the Vosges was a major centre for embroidery at the time. However, embroidery was first and foremost a “side job”, part of an apprenticeship in femininity and motherhood as part of the dowry and trousseau. The invisibility of embroiderers through working at home and its implications is another constant observed in the various oral and written testimonies recorded.
